Psychological Evaluations

We provide comprehensive psychological evaluations that assess a multitude of factors impacting an individual’s functioning, that may include intellectual and memory abilities, interpersonal skills, personality characteristics, and current mental health.

Types of Psychological Evaluations Offered

  • Differential diagnosis of behavioral or psychiatric conditions
  • Testing to develop psychotherapeutic treatment recommendations
  • Forensic evaluations in cases of suspected child maltreatment

The Evaluation Process

The evaluation process varies depending on the type of psychological evaluation being performed.  Psychological assessments typically include the following components:

Step 1

We begin an evaluation with a review of records.  We also conduct a collateral interview with family members or other people connected with your case (if applicable) to collect background information relevant to the reason for referral.

Step 2

Next, we utilize a structured clinical interview to obtain information regarding developmental, social, academic, medical, mental health and academic/employment histories.  We also conduct in a mental status exam.

Step 3

Generally we then administer a test of cognitive abilities that provides a measure of overall intelligence (IQ) and/or neuropsychological abilities that are relevant to your case.

Step 4

We assess social-emotional characteristics, personality traits, behavioral functioning, and overall mental health.  Assessment methods may include standardized self-report inventories, parent or teaching rating scales, and projective tests.

Step 5

In forensic cases, we conduct a validity assessment to evaluate your truthfulness and consistency across your background record, clinical interview, and effort and response patterns on psychological tests to determine whether your results appear valid, should be interpreted with caution, or invalidate the assessment.

Step 6

Finally, we integrate and summarize results from testing, rating scales, and interviews in a comprehensive report.  Because every assessment battery is individualized, we provide an in-depth description of any diagnoses given and specific recommendations based on your unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses.

Step 7

We then meet with you for a feedback session to explain the findings, treatment recommendations, and real-world implications of the results.  We are available to consult with other mental health professionals, schools, or other agencies regarding the findings.
