General Psychiatry

Psychiatry exists to diagnose and treat mental illness.

Classification and Treatment

Psychiatry exists to diagnose and treat mental illness, which can be classified as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, thought disorders, and personality disorders, just to name a few categories.  The goal of psychiatry, as with all of medicine, is to ease suffering.  A psychiatrist is trained to treat patients with psychotherapeutic techniques and medications.  Although there is no definitive test to diagnose mental illness, a psychiatrist will often order blood tests, x-rays, and MRI’s in order to rule out other physical illnesses that may be masquerading as mental illness.
