Personality Disorders

Your personality can be boiled down to your specific patterns of behavior, emotions, and thoughts.  No two people will have the same personality, not even identical twins.

Emotions and Impulses

People with personality disorders tend to have and difficulty regulating their emotions and impulses, resulting in lifelong difficulties in social situations, maintaining friendships, and occupational functioning.  Both genetic and environmental factors are thought to influence the development of a personality disorder.

An ongoing, therapeutic conversation about your individual personality traits and characteristics with a psychiatrist or psychologist is the mainstay of treatment, as medications are not usually indicated for personality disorders.  We work with you to address the symptoms of your particular personality disorder and to help you develop effective methods of relating to others.
